Why Use BOTOX®?
BOTOX® cosmetic is one of the most popular nonsurgical treatments to reduce creases and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes that develop from repeated facial movement. The horizontal lines on the forehead and crows feet around the eyes are due to repeated scowling or squinting. If you are able to stop the muscle movement early with preventative BOTOX® injections, you will have a greater chance of keeping the wrinkles away for greater period of time. If you already have wrinkles, BOTOX® injections will also help minimize their appearance.
How Does BOTOX® Work?
Treatment with BOTOX® cosmetic filler works by relaxing the muscles on the face and gives the skin a more youthful appearance. BOTOX® is a natural, purified protein produced by the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum. This is toxin, not a poison. A very low dose of BOTOX® is administered using very fine needles and tiny injections directly into the overactive muscles that cause the development of facial lines. BOTOX® works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. There is minimal pain with this simple treatment. The effects of decreasing wrinkling due to BOTOX® are confined to the injected area; BOTOX® does not travel throughout the body.
Most people who get BOTOX® at Norris Dermatology & Laser Northwest Portland are concerned about the possible side effects of the treatments. There may be slight redness or localized pain after the treatment that quickly resolves. An eyelid droop is also an unlikely side effect. A small percentage of the population (less than 1%) will not respond to the benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic.
The BOTOX® procedure is often misunderstood. It has been used for a variety of medical conditions since the 1980’s, which include muscle dysplasia, chronic migraines, lockjaw, and cervical dystonia. BOTOX® is also used to treat excessive sweating of the underarms, hands, and feet, which is also known as Hyperhidrosis. Dr. Norris has successfully treated many patients for excessive sweating over the years.
